Wealdstone produced one of their most impressive performances of the season to claim a deserved 2–0 victory away to Yeovil Town on a blustery Tuesday night in the National League.
Despite difficult conditions at Huish Park, Sam Cox’s side took control from the first whistle and never looked back, showcasing maturity, composure and tactical discipline against a full-time Yeovil team who had enjoyed a weekend off.
Speaking after the match to our Head of Media, Joe Campbell, Cox praised his team’s ability to manage both the elements and the occasion.
“From start to finish, I thought we controlled the game,” he said. “In those conditions, the way we managed possession and stuck to the game plan was outstanding. The players showed real maturity and took everything we worked on into the performance.”
Wealdstone’s measured approach paid dividends as they dictated play through midfield, with the backline and wide players combining effectively to limit Yeovil’s threat and build patiently from deep.
After Yeovil came out pressing higher in the second half, the Stones adapted quickly - finding the spaces to exploit the new shape. The breakthrough came through Dom Hutchinson, who finished off a flowing move following clever link-up play and energy down the flanks.
Cox was delighted with how his side handled Yeovil’s tactical shift.
“They changed their press and went aggressive, but the boys identified it and found the spare man brilliantly,” he explained. “Our wide play was excellent — Sak Hassan and the flanks gave us real energy and 1v1 quality.”
A touch of class from Omar Mussa in midfield helped create the second goal, sealing a fully deserved victory for the Stones.
The result extends Wealdstone’s fine recent run to one defeat in seven matches, a testament to the squad’s growing confidence and cohesion.
“There’s a real buzz and energy about the group,” said Cox. “Coming here, against a club that was in the Championship not long ago and being so dominant in possession - that’s a big statement for us.”
The win was even more impressive given the team’s short turnaround from their FA Cup exploits at the weekend. Wealdstone now turn their attention to another tough test at home to Braintree Town on Saturday.
Cox also handed debuts to young loanees Eddie Nassi and Turner, both of whom impressed with maturity beyond their years.
Meanwhile, the manager paid tribute to Phil Chinedu, recalled by parent club Leyton Orient after a standout spell at Grosvenor Vale.
“Phil’s been fantastic for us - instrumental in our strong start and an outstanding young professional,” said Cox. “He’s got a great future ahead of him and we thank him for everything he’s given.”
Wealdstone’s reward in the FA Cup is a trip to League Two side Grimsby Town on the weekend of December 5/6/7 - another exciting challenge that Cox’s side will approach with confidence and belief.
“It’s a free hit for us,” the Stones boss smiled. “We’ll go there with no fear and show what Wealdstone are all about - energy, fight and our identity.”
It's been quite some season so far for Sam Cox's side and they need everyone behind them this Saturday as they seek to continue their fine form at home v Braintree Town in the National League.
