Wealdstone delivered a calm and professional performance to defeat Yeovil Town at Huish Park on a wet and windy Tuesday night in the Enterprise National League.
Sam Cox made three changes to the team that defeated Southend Utd on Saturday in the Emirates FA Cup. Jack Cook, Max Kretzschmar and Omar Mussa came into the starting eleven, while new loan signings Steven Turner and Eddy Nsasi were named on the bench.
Excellent finishes from Dom Hutchinson and Max Kretzschmar saw the Stones despatch of the Glovers and move up to eighth place in the table.
Half-way through the warmup the heavens opened as strong winds saw Huish Park hit by sideways rain which lasted for the remainder of the evening. The Stones started the game playing into the wind and dominated possession in a first half of few chances as the sides adapted to the conditions.
Wealdstone were able to put Yeovil Town under pressure for short spells. In the sixteenth minute, Dom Hutchinson was played in behind and whipped an early ball across face of goal towards an arriving Micah Obiero who was only denied by a sliding Michee Efete at the back post.
The Stones continued to probe without finding the right final ball as Yeovil Town stood off their opponents, despite having the strong wind at their backs and the ball holding up in the sodden pitch.
Creative play from Sak Hassan in the closing moments of the half lead to Omar Mussa finding space on the edge of the penalty area but he was unable to keep his speculative shot down.
Yeovil Town came out the blocks in the second half with a far more aggressive press and the Stones were put under pressure for the first time in the game. Luke McCormick volleyed over after a long throw from the Glovers caused uncertainty in the Wealdstone box.
Yeovil then put together their best move of the game in the fifty-first minute, but fortunately for the Stones, Aaron Jarvis was unable to direct his shot goalwards as he met a low cross from the right-hand side.
It would be Wealdstone that opened the scoring though, now with the wind at their backs and more space to play into after breaking the press. Sak Hassan lead the way, driving at the byline before dinking a ball into the box. Obiero met the cross but was unable to head it goalwards. The ball fell to Dom Hutchinson however, who volleyed home on the spin and celebrated with the small band of travelling supporters.
The game then became more stretched as the Glovers looked to respond. Dante Baptise had to be on hand to deny Campbell from a tight angle, before Micah Oberio’s effort at the other end narrowly passed the post.
The Stones extended their lead in the seventy third minute through Max Kretzschmar. The ball was cleared to debutant Steven Turner on the edge of the area, who’s initial shot was blocked, but he and Obiero kept it alive before it fell to Kretzschmar who showed great technique to volley past Jed Ward in goal.
The second goal took the wind out of Yeovil Town’s sails and the Stones were able to navigate the final ten minutes well by keeping them at arm’s length and secured an important three points in Somerset.
