REACTION: "We Ran All Over Them" - Captain Connor On U's Win

CENTRE-HALF Connor McAvoy was proud to have led his side as skipper to a first Wealdstone win of the season - including a first clean sheet in the Enterprise National League campaign for 2026/27.

"The way we defended today we really limited their chances," said the 24-year-old centre-half.

"We looked at their long throws yesterday in our video analysis as the biggest threat, but we attacked the ball well and got our line up quickly.

"I thought [the other lads in] the back three were brilliant, and we had midfielders and strikers landing on second balls all the time." 

That was something which stopped hosts Sutton United - four wins from four league games before this 2-0 Stones' victory - establishing any kind of foothold in the game, and in fact saw Wealdstone simply continue to grow in confidence after Micah Obiero hit the first of his brace in the 12th minute.

Added the Stones' captain: "We started quickly and it showed today, they never settled. We ran all over them, had a lot of chances and deserved to win."

Statistics can occasionally misrepresent the balance of play between two teams, but not in the case of this very one-sided affair.

The Scotland Under-21 cap agreed that the result probably didn't do justice to the performance level shown throughout Gary Waddock's side.

"We comfortably won the game and deserved the three points. It could have been more," said McAvoy, referring to all of the game's best chances falling Wealdstone's way.

"We knew they were quite narrow so we felt out wide would be our best option, getting the wing-backs up and into play as much as we could when we regained possession."

One wing-back who featured prominently again with his crossing was Kyle Smith - but he wasn't actually due to start!

Dan Chesters picked up a knee complaint during the warm-up, so Smith's appearance in the starting line-up came as an unscheduled necessity not long before kick-off.

"Kyle did really well, coming at late notice," said McAvoy, who had plenty of family in support at the game, given they hail from not too far west of Sutton within the M25.

"Our wing-backs were key today and it showed."

And of the clean sheet, Captain Connor joked: "With Dante behind you, it's like having an octopus in goal, isn't it? He's got eight hands!"

"Seriously, he's been brilliant. He was last season and everyone knows how good he is.

"He showed it again today at the end, and that's after making two worldies on Friday night to keep us in with a chance of getting a point."

CAPTAIN McAVOY: Connor's Honour

GARY WADDOCK has named Connor McAvoy as Team Captain for the 2026/27 campaign, and he's wearing the armband with delight.

"The gaffer spoke to me before the season about wanting to test me with a bit more responsibility," explained the defender, a product of Fulham's academy.

"I've been around it last season, as well as previously here on loan. I know all the lads and they get on well with me."

A sign of the times, maybe, with McAvoy becoming a senior voice?

"It's a bit of a test for me to mature [further] and be a bit of a leader.

"I felt I did it well today so it's good, really good."
