This Week At The Vale
The Stones made the short trip to Woking for their first away game of the league season.
Sam Cox’s team took the lead in the 12th minute after a Woking defender pulled a Wealdstone attacker to the ground in the box, leading to the referee awarding a penalty, which was converted by Max Kretzschmar.
The hosts levelled the scoring in the 55th minute, before Nathan Tshikuna produced an excellent strike to seal the win for the Stones with just five minutes of regular time remaining!
Wealdstone won five league games in a row for the first time since their promotion to the National League, and the Stones briefly sat at the top of the league table.
In the wake of the performance, Coxy emphasised how “proud” he was of his players and said that he was “buzzing” that the team were giving the fans something to sing about. You can find his full post-match interview here.
Congratulations are also in order for Dante Baptiste, who was named in the National League Team of the Week after making a string of world-class saves to keep the Stones in the game at Woking. Well done, Dante!
The Wealdstone Board of Directors also offered an update on the lease extension at Grosvenor Vale, which can be found here.
The Opposition
Carlisle United find themselves in the National League after suffering successive relegations from League One and League Two.
Tipped by many to be competing for the league title, the Cumbrians have made a solid start to the season, picking up five points in their first three games. They required an 80th-minute goal from centre-back Terell Thomas to secure a point against Solihull Moors in midweek.
The Manager - Mark Hughes: Arguably the most well-known figure in the entire National League, Hughes was appointed as Carlisle manager in February 2025.
Although he oversaw an upturn in the Blues’ form during the second half of the 2024/25 season, it was not enough to save the club from relegation.
The 61-year-old extended his stay at Brunton Park in May 2025 and has overseen a highly ambitious recruitment project over the summer.
Hughes will not actually be on the touchline on Saturday evening and Frankie McAvoy will be leading the team in his place.
The 58-year-old has spent much of his career as an assistant to Alex Neil. He also had a very respectable stint in charge of Championship side Preston North End.
The Danger Man - Regan Linney: Even in a squad jam-packed with quality, picking Regan Linney as Carlisle’s danger man is a fairly easy decision.
The fifth tier has seen many prolific goal scorers and many players blessed with excellent technical ability, but very few with the combined goalscoring prowess and underlying technique that Linney possesses.
The 28-year-old finished last season with 23 goals and seven assists for Altrincham, making him the second-highest goalscorer in the league.
Linney also offers tremendous versatility, being able to lead the line or play on the left wing, which allows him to play alongside the likes of Luke Armstrong in a menacing-looking Carlisle attack.
