News From The Vale

The Stones picked up a 2-1 win against Leicester City u21s on Tuesday night, courtesy of an 84th-minute header from Max Kretzschmar. Sam Cox’s side have now picked up six points from their two games in the National League Cup.

Following the game, Cox said that his side were “thoroughly deserving” of the win. You can find his full post-match interview here.

Saj Vigneswaran picked up his first win as Wealdstone FC Women’s manager on Sunday as goals from Beverley Bruce-Mills and Gabi Racut earned the Stones a 5-2 victory.

Our man in form - Dom Hutchinson: The Stones’ in-form player heading into this game is the versatile Dom Hutchinson, who has shone during the last couple of matches.

Although he has previously been used in attacking midfield, the 23-year-old has starred at right wing-back against both the Heed and the Foxes.

He showed great desire and tenacity to close down George Shelvey’s attempted clearance and score the opener against Gateshead. Throughout the rest of the match, Hutchinson was defensively diligent whilst also providing good running power when going forward.

Against Leicester City, the number 17 was once again excellent defensively, making more defensive contributions than any other Stones player. He also showed great leadership and communication, forming a good partnership with the trialist in the final stages of the game.

The Opposition

Recent form: LLLLD

League Position: 24th

It is a fantastic achievement for Morecambe to even be playing football this season.

When the Stones kicked off their campaign against Truro, the Shrimps had just five senior players under contract, as they were in the midst of ownership-related problems.

It was these problems that saw them fail to build on an unforeseen promotion to League One during Covid, and they were relegated to the National League at the end of last season.

The manager - Ashvir Singh Johal: Sam Cox’s counterpart on Sunday is Ashvir Singh Johal, the youngest manager in the top five leagues of English football.

Despite being just 30 years of age, he has already built up an extensive coaching CV. He spent a considerable amount of time at Leicester City, working his way up to the under-18 side.

Following this, Singh Johal has had stints at Wigan Athletic, as a first-team coach, Como, as under-19 assistant manager and Notts County, as B-team head coach.

He was only appointed as the Shrimps’ manager one month ago, and he is still assembling his squad, signing four new players this week alone.

The danger man - Ben Tollitt: Picking a danger man amongst Morecambe’s squad is a fairly difficult task, as most players are still building fitness and tactical understanding.

One player who has experience and a proven record in the fifth tier is Ben Tollitt. The 30-year-old can play on either wing, in attacking midfield or even as a false nine if needed.

He has previously had success in the National League with Tranmere Rovers, for whom he scored six times in 18 games during the 2016/17 season, and Oldham Athletic. Tollitt was a regular fixture for the Latics during the 2022/23 campaign, finding the back of the net seven times in 36 games.

He finished last campaign as the Shrimps’ second-highest goalscorer, and was instrumental in their only win this campaign against Altrincham.
