Late, late drama in Academy game as Stones beat Barnet in thrilling derby

Updated: Sep 24, 2022

Adonis Mangonzo came off the bench to set one up and score the winner as the Academy side thrillingly came from behind to beat Barnet in a dramatic opening fixture of the Under-19 National League Alliance.

Cameron Mawer's side fell behind early in the second half when Marwan Hassan was beaten by a cool finish, but the introduction of Mangonzo on 80 minutes changed the course of this lively fixture at Harefield Academy.

The central midfielder saw his corner powerfully headed home by London Brookshaw and then, with time running out, Mangonzo side footed home from the edge of the area to spark wild celebrations.

Victory was ever so nearly snatched away at the death as with seconds to go Barnet's number 9 rounded Hassan and seemed certain to score, but Alex Munroe came from nowhere to clear the ball off the line.

"To start the season with such a tough fixture in terms of a derby against Barnet wasn’t going to be easy and they knew how important derby wins are and they looked nervy at times but delighted they managed to find a way to win," said Mawer. "We have worked tirelessly as staff and players, so I was delighted they got their rewards.”

The team are next in action on Thursday, September 29 when they travel to Tring Athletic for an FA Youth Cup tie.
