The Opposition

Recent form: WLWLD

League Position: 21st

Aldershot Town have been a fifth tier club for well over 10 years, though they have spent most of their time in the division scrapping in the bottom half of the table. This season has proved no different.

After an FA Trophy triumph last campaign, Tommy Widdrington left his managerial post in October, and the Shots dropped into the relegation zone, but they have been mounting somewhat of a fightback over the last couple of weeks.

They carry a relatively large goal threat, no side in the bottom half of the table has scored more than Aldershot in the league, but they are also a very volatile team, picking up the most red cards and second most yellow cards of any side in the National League.

The manager - John Coleman: Widdrington’s replacement was the highly experienced John Coleman, perhaps best known for his two 500+ game stints in charge of Accrington Stanley. His most recent stint with Accrington lasted a whopping nine years and six months, making him the longest-serving manager in the EFL at the time of his dismissal.

He led the team to the League Two title and the third tier of English football for the first time in the club’s history during the 2017-18 season, establishing the Reds in League One for four consecutive seasons.

Following his departure from the WHAM Stadium in March 2024, Coleman spent time in charge of Gillingham and Waterford FC before moving to Hampshire in October.

He has three wins in his 13 games in charge of the Shots, but they are unbeaten in their last three league games and rarely lose by more than one goal.

The danger man - Josh Barrett: The Shots possess one of the most technically gifted players in the fifth tier in the form of Josh Barrett.

Barrett came through the youth ranks at Reading, making 13 appearances and scoring two goals for the Royals as a youngster. He also represented the Republic of Ireland up to the under-21 level, even making an appearance in the under-21 European Championship.

He joined the Shots midway through the 2023/24 season, but really made his mark on the side last campaign. The versatile attacker scored 19 goals in all competitions, including once in the FA Trophy Final, as he won the Supporters’ Player of the Season award.

This season, Barrett has registered five goals and five assists in all competitions. He looks to have been hitting his stride in recent weeks after missing the entirety of November due to injury, registering an assist against Boston United and being named in the Non-League Paper Team of the Day after his performance against Altrincham.
