THE CONTEXT
Wealdstone welcome Woking to The Vale for an unusual Sunday midday kick off to be shown live on BT Sport. The Cardinals have made an indifferent start to the season, with three wins and three losses from their first six games, including one win from three away from home. Darren Sarll has been manager since March 2022 after he left Yeovil Town, and was involved in a large reshuffle, which saw key players such as the Stones’ Max Kretzschmar depart. Incomings to Woking were praised among lower league supporters, with the likes of experienced players Padraig Amond, Luke Wilkinson and Scott Cuthbert being joined by exciting young players James Daly, Reece Grego-Cox and Ricky Korboa.
TEAM NEWS Stones welcome back Deji Elerewe after the young defender served his one-match suspension, missing though is Lewis Kinsella who begins the first of a three-match ban for his red card on Bank Holiday Monday. Jaydn Mundle-Smith recovered from illness to return to the squad on Monday. Olufela Olomola and Mason Barrett are both near a return for Sunday and Matt Young is set to return to Leyton Orient following the completion of his loan spell.
ONE TO WATCH
James Daly exploded into life over the Bank Holiday weekend, with a goal and an assist in a 3-2 home loss against Wrexham on Saturday, also on BT Sport, which was followed up by two goals in a 3-1 win at Torquay United on Monday. The pacy 22-year-old forward can count Crystal Palace, Bristol Rovers and Stevenage amongst his former clubs, and currently stands as Woking’s top scorer with three in five games.
WHAT WAS SAID?
Stuart Maynard encouraged more supporters to The Vale to build on a 1714-strong crowd on Monday. He said, “They got right behind the lads today and that’s what we’ve got to be like all season.”
Woking manager Darren Sarll praised Daly after his productive weekend. “He took his second goal beautifully. James is in great form, probably the form of his senior career.”
DID YOU KNOW?
Popular 1970s band The Jam were formed and from Woking. The song ‘Town Called Malice’ is based on Weller’s struggles growing up in the town, and his band the Style Council filmed the music video for ‘Solid Bond in Your Heart’ at Kingfield Stadium.
