The Opposition
Recent form: WDWWL
League Position: 6th
Saturday’s opposition are familiar opponents, the Stones having already played and beaten Southend twice this campaign.
Kevin Maher’s side have once again put together a strong run of form in the latter part of the season, this time securing themselves a playoff berth with games to spare.
However, a defeat against Hartlepool United on Tuesday night put an end to any hopes the Shrimpers had of securing a home tie in the semi-finals of the playoffs.
The reverse fixtures: As previously mentioned, this will be the third time Wealdstone face Kevin Maher’s side this season, and the previous two meetings have gone the way of the Stones.
The Shrimpers travelled to The Vale at the start of September, and the Stones secured a three-two victory in an entertaining game.
Enzio Boldewijn opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before Southend scored an incredibly lucky equalising goal just before the half-an-hour mark.
But the Stones had the better of general play throughout the game, and a quick-fire double from Sean Adarkwa, either side of the 70-minute mark, was enough to secure the victory, even if Gus Scott-Morriss’ 84th-minute goal from a free-kick did put some pressure on the Stones in the dying minutes.
The sides then faced each other in the FA Cup almost exactly two months later, and the game was defined by the dismissal of Southend’s Ben Goodliffe in the 17th minute after he hauled down a Stones attacker who was running through on goal.
Just two minutes later, Olufela Olomola scored the only goal of the game, sweeping Dom Hutchinson’s cross past Nick Hayes.
Both sides forced the opposition goalkeepers to make a couple of good saves throughout the remainder of the contest, but the scoreline remained the same and the Stones knocked the Shrimpers out of the FA Cup.
The danger man - Gus Scott-Morriss: Southend United’s right-back is perhaps one of the most unique players to play in the National League in recent years, and he has achieved tremendous individual success.
Scott-Morriss scored a remarkable 17 goals in the league last campaign, and he has come close to matching that number this season.
Th2 8-year-old is a threat from set pieces, as Stones fans will remember from the first game against Southend this season, but he is also adept at making late runs into the box and finding himself on the end of crosses.
