Match Report | York City 4-0 Wealdstone
It was a tough afternoon on the road for Wealdstone, who were beaten four-nil by York City in the Enterprise National League.
The Stones had the first shot of the game, as Omar Mussa flashed a powerful strike just wide of the post in the fifth minute.
Two minutes later, Micah Obiero showed excellent technical ability to control a lofted pass, though he was unable to find accuracy with his final strike.
A quarter of an hour into the game, Mussa made an excellent challenge to dispossess Alex Hunt on the edge of the York City box. The Burundi international’s strike failed to test Harrison Male in the York City goal.
Dante Baptiste made an excellent save to deny Liam Kitching’s strike from the outside of the box in the 17th minute. The Minstermen scored from the second phase of the resultant corner, via the head of Malachi Fagan-Walcott.
26 minutes in, Stuart Maynard’s side doubled their lead. Ollie Pearce was able to tap in from inside the six-yard box after Baptiste initially made a good save.
Micah Obiero thought he had halved the deficit with 10 minutes to go before half time, only for his strike to be ruled out by the offside flag.
Sam Cox’s men had another good chance three minutes before the break. Junior Tiensia whipped a dangerous cross into the box, but there were no onrushing Stones attackers to provide the finishing touch.
Joe Grey almost scored a third for the Minstermen just seconds before half time. However, Baptiste held his nerve and smothered the youngsters’ attempt from a narrow angle.
Half time: York City 2-0 Wealdstone
It was the hosts who made the brighter start to the second half. An intricate passing move ended with Alex Hunt having a shot from inside the Stones’ box, which whistled just wide of the goal.
Mussa had his third strike of the match in the 52nd minute, his long-range shot forcing Male into a good save.
Grey ran through on goal in the 56th minute following an enterprising solo run, but he was met by a resolute Baptiste, who made a sublime save to deny York their third goal of the game.
Unfortunately, the Minstermen’s third goal came just three minutes later. Pearce was played through on goal and produced a deft, chipped finish to beat Baptiste.
Joe Felix almost got in behind the Wealdstone defence in the 70th minute. Tiensia made an excellent recovery run to deny the 26-year-old.
The Stones pressed well to win the ball back in a dangerous area shortly afterwards. Obiero tried to replicate the flicked finishes he produced against Whitstable Town from Max Kretzschmar’s cross, but he could not quite make sufficient contact.
Alex Newby scored York’s fourth goal of the game in the 75th minute. A good passing move played the former Altrincham man through on goal, and his poked effort went in off the post.
Five minutes from full time, Nathan Young-Coombes sent a looping header towards the York goal following a corner. However, it could not quite dip underneath the crossbar in time.
