Match Report | Truro City 2-0 Wealdstone

Wealdstone’s six-game unbeaten streak in the Enterprise National League came to an end after an uncharacteristic 2-0 defeat on the road against Truro City.

Sam Cox made three changes to his side that triumphed Cheshunt in the third round of the Isuzu FA Trophy on Saturday, as Enzio Boldewijn, Dylan Kadji and Olufela Olomola all returned to the starting line-up for the Stones.

As dusk settled over Cornwall, Wealdstone got off to a near-perfect start as in the opening minute, a pouncing Olufela Olomola struck the ball cleanly on the left side of the box, calling Aidan Stone into early action, only for the linesman to raise his flag for offside.

Truro City threatened moments later, earning a free-kick after Dominic Johnson-Fisher was brought down by Deon Woodman. Tyler Harvey stepped up and curled a brilliant effort that soared inches over Baptiste’s crossbar.

The Tinners continued in ascendancy, as Lirak Hasani floated the ball into the Stones' box from a set piece, picking out his captain, Connor Riley-Lowe, but Dante Baptiste was well-positioned to gather comfortably.

Wealdstone came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock, after their high press provoked a misplaced back pass from Shaun Donnellan, which forced Aidan Stone to react quickly and make a save to deny the Stones the opener via an own goal.

Sam Cox was forced into an early change as Wealdstone’s top goal scorer this season, Micah Obiero, was forced off through injury and was replaced by Daniel Nkrumah.

Truro City opened the scoring in the 36th minute when Lirak Hasani’s looping corner picked out Tyler Harvey at the back post, whose scuffed right-footed effort fell kindly for Dominic Johnson Fisher to tap home and give the Tinners the advantage.

Just before the half-time whistle, Sak Hassan went in search of an equaliser, combining neatly with Dom Hutchinson before bursting down the left flank and whipping in a fast-paced cross, only to be gathered by Aidan Stone.

Half Time: Truro City 1-0 Wealdstone

Sam Cox’s side showed improved composure after the break and looked to gain a foothold, but Truro City continued to test the Stones’ backline as Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain launched a long throw that glanced off Tyler Harvey’s head and rattled the crossbar.

Entering the hour mark, substitute Omar Mussa looked to make an immediate impact, taking a set-piece quickly to find Olufela Olomola down the right flank, who delivered a dangerous cross, but there was no Stones player on hand to apply the finish.

The Tinners began to grow further into the game and were encouraged by the Stones being uncharacteristically loose in possession.

A costly turnover proved decisive in the 67th minute, as Anthony Georgiou was dispossessed by a high-pressing Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain, who drove forward to power a left-footed strike into the bottom left corner to double Truro City’s lead.

Buoyed by their second goal, John Askey’s side found an attacking rhythm, with Dante Baptiste being called into action once more to repel a thunderous strike from Tyler Harvey.

Enzio Boldewijn produced a heroic goal-line clearance minutes later to deny Truro City a third, heading Lirak Hasani’s curling right-footed effort off Baptiste’s line.

Despite the scoreline, the Stones battled to the final whistle with tenacity and determination.
