Academy gets boost with FA Cup call-up

The club's evolving Academy gained a feather in its cap at the weekend when one of its scholars made the matchday squad against Boreham Wood.

Winder Michael Babalola was on the bench for the FA Cup tie at Meadow and gained valuable experience from being part of Stuart Maynard's game-day preparations.

"This shows that if you're doing the right things you will get an opportunity within the first team," said Academy Manager Cameron Mawer. "The gaffer isn’t afraid to give young players the chance and asks constantly who’s playing well and who’s ready."

Babalola came onto Maynard's radar after scoring a free-kick in the midweek Under-19 National League game against Hemel.

"He's a hard-working boy who can play either side," said Mawer. "He has excellent delivery from crosses and set plays. He has great feet and excites people with his dribbling and his ability to take players on.

"He shows signs that he can go to the next level but still has a lot of work to do, but he’s the type of player we want and has the Wealdstone DNA. He’s comfortable with the ball and is happy to take the ball when he’s marked and under pressure.

"I am excited about his development and feel this opportunity is something that will help him grow and give him a taste of the next level."
