Marathonbet Premier League Legends Match Provisionally Set for Sunday 17th July

marathonbet_nlcWealdstone Football Club has won Marathonbet’s Non-League Challenge – a nationwide competition in support of Prostate Cancer UK to find Non-League football’s greatest goal celebration.

The National league South club has scooped a potential £50,000 prize with the online bookmaker that includes a share of the proceeds from a Premier League legends match in July. The cash prize is £10,000.

The challenge, launched in November last year, called on all 68 clubs of the National League, National League South and National League North to record their best goal celebration. From animal impersonations to fans going bonkers in the stands, hordes of entries were whittled down to a final five before the clubs embarked on a campaign to win public votes.

Wealdstone won the most votes ahead of Chelmsford, Truro City, Whitehawk and Torquay United – in no particular order – thanks to the Wealdstone Raiders hilarious ‘dentist chair’ impersonation after his beloved side scored against Truro City in February.

Club President Paul Rumens said “We’re all absolutely thrilled to have won the competition and the £10K cash prize.

“Obviously we need some big name stars for the game provisionally set for Sunday July 17 to help us fill the stadium and bring in as much as a further £40K in gate, bar, sponsors and other income.

“The club is ecstatic. We want to thank everyone who gave their support and voted. We’re going to spend some of the cash on the team.

“It’s going to be amazing playing against a team of Premier League legends at our ground this summer. We’ve set a target of a sell-out and record crowd for the game’

Rumens praised the emergence of Wealdstone’s internet-star ambassador, The Raider, and high-lighted his importance in the club’s success in recent years.

He added “He’s been phenomenal for the club and has helped us grow and grow.

“We always try and us his fame for good, be it the club and or charities. Gordon is always game for a laugh and we thank him and others at the club who made this happen”
