Match Preview – Wealdstone vs East Thurrock United 15 Mar 2014
League leaders Wealdstone welcome Essex outfit East Thurrock United to The Vale on Saturday, aiming to record their fourth straight league victory. Three midweek points propelled The Stones to the Ryman League summit for the first time this calendar year, and with four games in hand on the best of the chasing pack, they don’t look like they’ll be shifted any time soon.
Gordon Bartlett’s side are currently unbeaten in their last ten matches in all competitions, impressively running out winners in eight of those. The latest came on Tuesday night when they claimed a precious 2-0 win away at Wingate & Finchley, courtesy of strikes from midfielders Mark Bentley and Carl McCluskey.
In stark contrast, Wealdstone’s opponents this weekend sit just one place above the relegation zone, with only goal difference keeping them afloat as it stands. The Rocks have only managed two league victories since November, but with a fixture backlog even greater than their hosts this weekend, time is still well on their side as they bid to save their season.
The game represents the first of two meetings between the teams within a matter of weeks, due to a re-arranged fixture, and the Stones head to Rookery Hill for the return fixture on 3rd April.
Wealdstone may sit at the top of the table and have more points than most still to play for, but manager Gordon Bartlett will certainly not be taking anything for granted at this stage of the season. His side will continue to come up against teams with just as much at stake, so as the fixtures mount up, he’ll be using every player at his disposal to keep his squad fresh.
Admission is £10 Adults, £5 Concession and £2 for under 16’s. Don’t forget if you are a Season Ticket holder with another Club (except our opponents of course) entry to The Vale is just £5
