Reading Girls 3 Wealdstone Girls 2
The U18s girls were up against(13 Jan ) an unbeaten Reading, and put up a fine performance eventually going down 3-2, after leading twice in the match.
Wealdstone had the better of the early play and could have gone ahead in the 14th minute, when a cross from Steffi Sarratt on the left found Ria Bird in the penalty area, but she could not get the ball from under her feet. In the 19th minute, Wealdstone were awarded a penalty after a Reading player handled. Unfortunately, Megan Craig hit her penalty over the bar. Wealdstone deservedly went ahead in the 29th minute, when Catherine Fahy’s cross was met by Sophie Clegg with a delicate touch. In the space of the next 10 minutes, Reading had 3 chances on goal, all well saved by Helena Zepetes in goal.
However, Helena had no chance in the 46th minute, and Reading equalised. The second half was only 4 minutes old when Catherine again turned supplier, this time for Rochelle Mills who calmly lobbed the ball over the oncoming Reading goalkeeper, 2-1 to Wealdstone. 5 minutes later Wealdstone had a great chance to make it 3-1 when another Catherine cross was missed by Ria Bird.
On what was becoming a bitterly cold afternoon, Reading equalised on 72 minutes when a fierce shot went in off the inside post. Six minutes later, Reading went ahead for the first time when a weak shot deceived Steffi Sarratt in goal.
