A Message from the Manager
I never thought I would miss doing the club call line but it must have acted as therapy for all these years and after a heavy defeat I need a medium to express my reflections and frustrations.
Our thoughts prior to the game were about going to Hornchurch to defend by playing 4-5-1, but everyone in the management ended up feeling we needed to be positive and trust the system that had served us well in the early part of the season with two up front. I must now reflect on what if?
I can’t remember the last time we were hit for six and although it hurts, it’s behind us and we must now look for a response. Full credit to Hornchurch who came at us with 3 up front and 3 at the back and we found ourselves 2 down and down to 10 men. In the first 15 minutes.
They were bigger, stronger and quicker but the sending off killed us and Sean knows he was in the wrong and gave us a mountain to climb.
A man down and 2 behind, we had no choice but to be positive and go 3 at the back and try to get some width. Decision made, Stefan promptly gets booked and didn’t help his or our own situation by not going to the referee and we subbed him with Jerome. Things improved and we forced the keeper into a couple of saves in the latter stages of the half and then spent a very positive 15 minutes in the dressing room emphasising how important the next goal would be. Within 30 seconds of the restart James gave away what looked to be a very soft penalty and the writing was on the wall.
Hornchurch are on the crest of a wave at the moment, confidence is sky high and they certainly got the rub of green on occasions today but we must learn valuable lessons from this afternoon. Good teams have resilience and get stronger in times of adversity and we need to use this humiliating result to strengthen our character.
I must extend a huge thank you to the loyal fans who performed a damn sight better than the players today, It was amazing support under the circumstances and we owe them a good response.
Let’s put it behind us and bounce back much better for this experience.
