Stones make promotion intentions clear with Fitzgerald signing

Wealdstone have signed vastly experienced striker Scott Fitzgerald, 31, from Blue Square Conference Premier side Hayes and Yeading.Fitzgerald started his career locally at Northwood FC before being signed by Championship side Watford in February 2003. He scored on his professional debut in April 2003 in a 2-0 win over Sheffield United on the final day of the season.

The following season he scored 11 goals to finish as the club’s top scorer and in total made 55 first team appearances for the Hornets. He continued his pro career with loan spells at Leyton Orient and at Brentford made 23 appearances and was later signed by Walsall.

More recently Fitzgerald has played for AFC Wimbledon and Basingstoke Town. At Hayes and Yeading the powerful front player has been a consistent goalscorer.

Stones Manager Gordon Bartlett said: ‘I have been looking for a player of his type for some time and Scott has the ideal experience and attitude to compliment our young squad who just missed out on the playoffs in the last two seasons. Now Hayes have gone full time in the Conference, it didn’t fit in with Scott’s day job and I jumped at the opportunity at signing a proven goal-scorer. The recent additions to our squad sends out a strong message that I want to put pressure on everyone at the club. Nearly achieving over the last couple of years has been encouraging, but it is not good enough and I am fed up with giving reasons and excuses. Now is the time to deliver and although I am happy with the squad, don’t be surprised if we see a couple more signings in the upcoming weeks.’
