Wealdstone’s Carl Martin to be signed by Crewe Alexandra
Wealdstone’s star defender Carl Martin, 22, who was out of contract at the end of last season has been signed by Crewe Alexandra, subject to a medical. Dario Gradi’s first move as the new manager of Coca Cola League Two club Crewe Alexandra has been to resurrect a deal that
had been rejected by the previous manager, Gudjon Thorarson. Martin is set to to sign a two-and-half year deal with Alex after impressing over a extended trial period. Wealdstone will not recieve a transfer fee for the player but will be entitled to compensation and a deal has been worked out between the two clubs and will be based on Carl’s progress and appearances.
Dario Gradi told crewealex.net: ‘Carl is a player I didn’t know much about in the summer. I saw him around the place, but we always had trialists at the training ground. On one of his final days with us he came to train with the scholars and he was very impressive. He was athletic and quick and we got talking. I didn’t see him again because I thought Gudjon wasn’t going to sign him.’
‘When I was re-appointed (last Friday) I found out that he hadn’t signed for Dagenham where he was on trial and I said I would be interested in him again and he is up today (Tuesday) having a medical.
Gradi added: ‘ He is a right back, who can play centre-half and he will join up with the first team squad and he is one for the future’
Wealdstone Manager Gordon Bartlett said: ‘ I am absolutely delighted for Carl. We have always known and aided his ambition to play at a higher level. During his six years at Wealdstone we have developed his undoubted talent. He is a great lad and has also worked hard with us
on the Youth side and was only down with us again this past week. We are proud at this club of the conveyor belt of talent we continue to devlop and Professional clubs know this very well.
‘I am sure that more will follow into the Football League from the current squad to emulate the likes of Carl, Jermaine, Marvin Morgan, Monty and others’ added the Stones Boss
