Stones ready for big kick off

Another exciting new season is about to dawn at Wealdstone and hopes and dreams for a successful season are high. Last season began in a rightly understated and realistic manner and this quiet but hugely determined approach combined with a not unfamiliar slow start undoubtedly spurred on the Stones to become one of the biggest surprise packages in the whole of the non-league game.

But there is a strong sense that there is a job unfinished and Stones tremendous team spirit and unwavering self belief will be as strong as ever with all of the squad from last campaign remaining together, bolstered with several excellent close season additions.

But no one at the club is predicting that the 2012/13 campaign will be any easier for all of the success of reaching the play-offs and FA Trophy semi-finals. The Ryman Premier League this season will be a tough, even tougher, nut to crack with some very strong, ambitious and monied clubs joining the division with no  ‘also rans’.

Unusually, Wealdstone start their league campaign with three homes games at a refurbished Vale complete with more new terracing, a brand new club shop and catering unit. First up is Metropolitan Police on Saturday 18th August (3pm ko), and whilst The Blues will not be bringing a huge away following with them, their team will be buoyed up by a very strong series of pre-season results on the back of some astute summer signings. Saturday’s clash is soon followed on Tuesday 21st when East Thurrock United are the visitors (7.45pm ko) and then newly promoted Leiston – an unknown quantity for Stones – travel up from deepest Suffolk the following Saturday.

Stones will not have a full squad to choose from for these opening games as carried over suspensions and unavailability mean that Sean Cronin, Chris O’Leary and new signing Tommy Brewer will be missing. It is also hoped that club skipper Wes Parker will recover from his foot injury that has put him out of the last couple of warm up games.metpolic

Good news this week is that dynamic wing back Scott McCubbin has signed a one year contract.
