Ware 0 – 3 Wealdstone
0 - 3
It was a case of ‘Get Carter’ on Tuesday evening at Ware as ‘old’ Wealdstone favourite Martin Carter made a dramatic come-back appearance
having been in retirement for an astonishing five year period following a serious back injury that forced his untimely departure from the
game. Midfield maestro Carter played for the Stones from 2001 to 2005 and made 161 appearances scoring 10 goals and has clearly convinced
Gordon Bartlett of his hunger to return to full fitness and contend for a place in the squad – good news indeed for the Stones faithful.
Stones made a comfortable entry into the next round of the league cup competition with the hosts rarely threatening with any real cutting
edge. Goods news also that Danny Spendlove returned from injury to score the opener for his side after 15 minutes striking a rising shot
after some neat footwork.
Sean Cronin doubled Stones lead after 25 minutes when the home keeper fumbled and the big defender hooked in with his left foot.
Wealdstone wrapped up the scoring and the tie when loanee Reece Yorke netted 7 minutes after the break with a low shot into the corner
from the edge of the 6 yard box.
There was even time for 34 year old substitute Carter to revive memories of his considerable repertoire when he almost scored with a
chipped effort that narrowly went over.
